Breastfeeding On The Go

Here’s one of the best things about breastfeeding.  No preparation required. That’s right.  No shopping.  No formula to prepare.  No bottles to clean and sterilize.  The kitchen is literally open, all the time. And that makes traveling easy. When you head out with your baby, you don’t have to remember to take formula or bottles with you.

So what do you need?  It all depends on the routine you and your baby have.  If you’re accustomed to using a nursing pillow, then you may have to stick that in your diaper bag.  There’s actually even a Boppy pillow designed for travel, called the Way To Go Travel Pillow. It zips open and closed into a more compact shape, complete with straps.

Nursing in public… in a restaurant, on an airplane, at the mall, in the supermarket…can feel daunting sometimes. But once you get the hang of it, it’s pretty easy. Just find a spot where you can sit comfortably and feel at ease. Quiet and privacy are nice, but not required. Also, you don’t necessarily need a special cover-up, to feed in public. If, however, it makes you feel more comfortable, then bring along a nursing shawl.  And don’t forget some burp cloths so you can be sure to keep your clothes clean.

Finally, don’t forget some diapers, wipes, changing mat and change of clothes for baby. What goes in, must come out – especially for exclusively breastfed babies who have a tendency to  have explosive poops!
