Ask Ali: Disposable vs. Cloth Diapers

Q: I’m not sure how I feel about cloth diapers versus disposable. Is one really better than the other?

A: In the early months, diaper changes can happen up to 18 times per day. That’s a lot of diapers! But if a decision to use cloth includes a diaper service, the jury’s still out on which diaper is actually better for the environment.  And most moms will argue over which is better for baby, but it really comes down to a personal preference. Don’t invest in a lifetime supply until you’ve tried them both out and know which you prefer. Even among disposable brands, you’re likely to find you’ll have a clear preference that has more to do with your baby’s unique shape than which is better — and even this may change as your baby grows older.

Here are a few things to think about as you ponder your choices:

  • Disposable: These win in the convenience department, with the easiest clean-up at home and on the go. Whether you choose a traditional brand or an eco option, disposables can be the most efficient way to diaper.
  • Cloth: Pre-folded diapers are extra absorbent and can be folded down to fit any size. They can also do double duty as burp cloths, and could possibly save you money in the long run. Make sure you have plenty on hand to use while the dirty diapers are being washed! Now with diaper covers, our moms’ diaper pins are largely a thing of the past!
  • Hybrids: An eco-friendly option, and a great compromise between disposable and cloth, these offer the convenience of disposables without the waste. Hybrids offer a great fit, super absorbency and overall ease of use. Brands like Bambino Mio and gDiapers are great hybrid diaper solutions and we applaud both for their efficacy. Look for an option with an easily flushable liner for the best usability.

Harper Changing Table

Want to make sure your diaper table is well stocked? Here are some more essentials to keep on hand:

Changing table: A designated space with supplies nearby will make diapering easier. One equipped with a harness or belt will make it safer too!

Diaper wipes: These can be disposable or reusable, and parents should keep plenty on hand.  Out of stock, a little warm water and water goes a long way.

Diaper cream: Choose a daily protective barrier for prevention or an ointment to treat rashes.

Diaper bag: Keep it stocked with supplies for diapering away from home, including a changing pad to provide a clean surface.

VIPP Diaper Pail

Diaper caddy:Keep your supplies organized and close at hand.

Diaper pail: Invest in a good metal can if you want something that’s odor-proof and pick a style that doesn’t require expensive bag fills or that can support an eco bag option.
