Let’s Talk Accessories! Booties, Socks, Hats and Other Newborn Necessities

Shopping for babies is a joy in itself and like many parents I am forever swooning at adorable dresses, little outfits and mini shoes. Although it isn’t hard to find beautiful baby clothes and tiny footwear, I’ve found that when it comes to accessories, well.. it’s a little more difficult to locate pieces that perform as they should.
For example, until the birth of my second child, I was unable to find a suitable baby hat that wouldn’t shrink down three sizes after washing. Baby socks that didn’t slide or roll off my newborn’s tiny toes seemed impossible to find and baby booties? Well, let’s just say I’ve lost many a shoe with both of my girls thanks to the countless pairs that have popped off their feet!

Luckily, after some trial, error and a whole lot of testing I came across some incredibly brands that have yet to let me down!

Socks & Booties

Mimicking stylish baby shoes like Mary Janes and high top sneakers, Trumpette’s designer socks are sized to fit infants ages 0-12 months. Amazingly enough, this is the only brand I’ve found that actually stays put on my baby’s feet (the uber cute styles are a huge bonus as well!).

Research has proven that soft sole shoes allow an infant’s foot to grow and develop naturally while providing protection, which is why they are preferred for little ones. When it comes to a particular brand, you can’t go wrong with Robeez. The soft and supple leather shoes come in various colors featuring whimsical animal creatures, cute girly designs and adorable boy styles that are hard to resist.

Another great thing about these shoes is that they don’t slip or fall off! Thanks to the built-in ankle elastic, Robeez booties are next to impossible for babies to remove.

Mitts
Baby mitts are highly underrated! A newborn’s skin is so delicate and soft, but those tiny fingers have nails that can scratch like there is no tomorrow. To be honest, I never thought these little mitts would be a necessary purchase until my eldest began scratching at her face (and mine) when she was around 3 weeks old.

Personally, I’m a big fan of the built-in versions so often found on baby gowns and one piece outfits, but for outfits that don’t offer this perk – and in the summer months when you have ditched long sleeves for short sleeve and sleeveless styles –  removable mitts are an excellent choice! giggle has you covered in that department with their Better Basics line where they offer mitts in a bright organic orange stripe version and 3 organic solid colors.

Leg Warmers
Crawling babies and toddlers used to be the only ones benefiting from Baby Legs’ smart design, but last July the company debuted their newborn line suitable for little babies and preemies. These leg warmers are great for keeping tiny legs warm when they are dressed in body suits. They are also fabulous for frequent diaper changes as there are no snaps to undo!

What about hats?
Well, for a lightweight multi-purpose hat, Zutano beats all. Their baby hats do NOT shrink, are true-to-size and come in a wide range of colors and prints.

For Fall and Winter, JJ Cole’s Bundle Me Hat is a tried and true favorite. You quite honestly can’t get any better than this when it comes to warmth, quality and fit (the stretchy polyester lining grows with your newborn). The best part – it’s made from the very same shearling fabric used in the interior of the infamous JJ Cole Bundle Me (a winter must-have).
